My paternal grandfather had many boxes full of many bits. After he passed away, I ended up with a few random items which recently I turned into new things.
The first was an old drill bit box. The lovely flip-out sections that were meant to hold bits seemed perfect for crochet hooks, so with a bit of hot glue, I dressed the box up a bit. I even pulled a wee stegosaurus woodcut I’d had for ages, and failed to do anything with, to decorate what is now the front of my decorative tool stand.
I also have an old toolbox that belonged to him. For years I used it to store loose photos, but recently I thought of a better use. Using a bit of spare yarn and some corrugated paper, I turned it into a combination tissue box/phone charger that now lives on the kitchen counter. To dress up the underside of the lid, we used some fun stickers I had squirreled away, but we still need to add some more. It now sits next to the Sonos that powers the kitchen speakers (more about those later), the primary phone for the landline (more on that later too), and the old iPad that I turned into a permanent display for our new weather station. The result is a nice little centralized spot of technology.
