The race team that works out of Purgatory is named Bernal Dads Racing. Most of the racers are indeed dads and most originally lived in Bernal Heights (and many still do live there). Agent Smith became acquainted with them when we lived on Potrero Hill. He had just purchased the 914 and a former co-worker of mine heard the news. That scored him an invite to the Tuesday night wrenching at a team member’s garage, which eventually spiraled into him becoming a central part of the team. It also is one of the big reasons we ended up buying this place, as hey, HUGE garage.
The team has existed for nearly twenty years and many of the fathers’ kids are later teens, so the dads did what many fathers of teenagers do: they bought them a car. Not just any car though–a used Mustang LeMons car. And no, I do not mean the car was a lemon (although it turns off the wiring harness so it did come close, but that got sorted early on). This was going to be the kids’ 24 Hours of LeMons race car. It was brought to the Purgatory garage where various tidy-ups were completed–it got stickers and a few licks of paint, and then it joined the Volvo for a few races.
