If you’ve read most of the posts here, you might remember the tale of the old planter boxes we purchased when we lived in San Francisco. Originally they sat outside the kitchen but were soon moved to outside the boys’ room in the little alcove there.
I’m happy to report they’re still being used–a variety of succulents now reside in them and Agent B has taken over their management. The old RainDial timer that serviced the boxes was recently replaced with a Rachio unit; we’ve moved all our irrigation stuff to Rachio. The two Rain Machine units we used didn’t play well with HomeKit, so a while back we moved to Rachio. Then we extended things with a couple of their hose timers–one controls the feed for the water pot while the other waters the pretty jacaranda we recently planted by the garden shed.
Here are pics of of the planter boxes, including the time the semi-friendly-feral peacock used them as a bed. They are also a great spot for still-alive-but-dazed small birds to recuperate if a Cooper’s hawk has bounced them into a window. (Bonus points to any birders who can ID the little one.)
One other thing to note: there’s a window feeder in one of the images. We no longer use those, as they are a great way for birds to share diseases you don’t want them to share.
Here’s a shot of the planter boxes from today; as you can see, things are flourishing.
