New Fencing

Posted on April 28, 2025April 23, 2025 By stega

Last year I posted a video of our–what is the word I’m looking for–I’ll go with godawful-probably-drunken-idiot neighbor arguing with me regarding the need for new fencing to keep their livestock off our land. Here’s the vid in case you missed it:

Fencing with Neighbors, aka Arguing with Idiots

So about a week after the video was posted, I brought in a crew to start redoing the eastern fence line. Here are some images of what things looked like:

Of course the neighbors did not clear the weeds or their garbage away from the fence nor offer any assistance, so the crew had to deal with it themselves. This meant instead of six days, it took 8. During that time the crew drove in new 7′ posts and put up new no-climb mesh. The extra two days drove up the price by 2K, so technically our neighbors now owe us $4396.32. Obviously they haven’t reached out to ask what their share cost is, and a few days after the work was completed, one of their manky horses jumped over the fence. Since we aren’t ready to electrify it, as the line at the well tank is 220v and still needs to be grounded and stepped down, Agent Smith instead ran a stringer line of barbed wire that has kept the horses at bay.

I have a letter drafted but we haven’t sent it yet. Anyone have any suggestions?

Greetings,
Per our discussions last spring, the shared fence line between our two properties was re-fenced in May/June of last year in order to address the ongoing issue of your livestock damaging the fence and crossing over onto our parcel. New posts and mesh were put in place by a crew over the course of eight days. This was extended past the original estimate due to the amount of garbage that had been allowed to accumulate on your side of the old fence line.
Attached are copies of the purchase receipts and a breakdown of the total costs. As we have not completed electrification of the new line but instead are relying on a barbed stringer, the items to complete this step were purchased and are on the receipts, but we are not requesting you share costs for them at this time.
Your share of the total cost is $4396.32.
Thanks,

Mike and LC
